This might just be the best news of the year for me, as I used to play the game quite a bit back in the day. The original Guild Wars is getting a big overhaul, ArenaNet has announced on their blog.
What’s new? It’s cheaper, for starters (£17.99). And if you already own the game it’s completely free, even if you just have the base campaign. Plus, there’s still no subscription.
More importantly, the game will feature updated graphics and audio. Visual improvements include lighting changes, dynamic sky effects, better ambient occlusion and cleaner textures. Judging by the trailer it still very much retains the look of the original game, but that’s not a bad thing. I’ve always been fond of this artstyle.
Perhaps most interesting of all is that Guild Wars Reforged is Steam Deck verified. They’ve added controller support and redesigned the UI to be simpler and useable on smaller displays, essentially making it handheld-friendly.
For now, it’s PC/Steam only and there’s no mention of a console port. We can only hope they expand this release to other platforms eventually. Personally, I’d love a Switch 2 port.
