Bloomberg: No More PlayStation PC Ports

Sony

Well, it’s official. Bloomberg reports that Sony is going to stop making PC ports of their first-party PlayStation games. This means that Ghosts of Yotei and Saros will not be leaving the PS5.

This is, of course, not terribly shocking given that Sony is a console manufacturer. At the end of the day, they want to sell hardware and push PS Plus on its customers. And with the next generation (presumably) only a few years away, they are likely getting worried that people will skip the PS6 and simply wait for Steam ports of their games instead.

Bloomberg speculates that the upcoming Xbox console could also play a role in this decision, as it is rumoured to basically be a PC.

Another factor behind Sony’s pivot may be Microsoft’s next Xbox, which is rumored to use Windows and be capable of playing PC games. Some executives at PlayStation may not be thrilled at the prospect of one of the company’s flagship games like God of War running on the next Xbox console.

Furthermore, it seems that Sony’s PC games simply haven’t sold as well as the company had hoped. So while this news is bad for gamers, it’s probably the right choice on Sony’s part.

Again, this really shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone. Exclusives have always existed for one primary purpose, and that is to attract people to your platform/eco-system. With previously exclusive titles like Final Fantasy VII Remake/Rebirth going multi-platform, Sony will need all they can get their hands on for next-gen.

Thankfully, it doesn’t seem like online titles like Marathon and Marvel Tokon are going to be affected by this change in direction, so there’s that.

Interesting times ahead.
